ABOUT THE SOUTH MORAVIAN REGION

The South Moravian Region is an economically and culturally important region of the Czech Republic. Its population of 1,130,000 is the third largest in the Czech Republic and is the fourth largest region by area (7196.5 km2). The region borders both Austria and Slovakia, and is undergoing development in the fields of science, research and innovative business. In the South Moravian Region there is, unlike other Czech regions, a long tradition of viniculture and a number of tourist destinations inscribed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.

The capital city of the South Moravian Region is Brno which has 370,000 inhabitants and is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. Brno is the seat of six state and a number of private universities and, due to its 70,000 inhabitants, it is rightly termed a university city. The city is also a trade fair centre of European importance and the Brno Exhibition Centre plays host to fifty annual exhibitions and trade fairs. Brno is also the seat of the supreme judicial bodies of the Czech Republic and other public institutions. The Brno-Tuřany international airport testifies to the international outlook of the city, and the international Grand Prix of the Czech Republic, which takes place annually at the Masaryk Ring which brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city every year.
